Up-Helly-A’ is a fire festival held annually in Lerwick on the last Tuesday in January and is a celebration of Shetland’s Viking heritage. There are around 50 squads of guisers but only the Jarl Guizer Squad is dressed in Viking outfit. Marches and celebrations occur throughout the day with the event reaching a spectacular climax in the evening. Street lights are turned off with the only source of light coming from the 900 flaming torches carried by the guizers - high ISOs are needed for photography. After a procession around the streets, the guizers then throw their torches into the Viking galley, setting it ablaze. Thereafter follow all-night parties in halls around the town with the guizer squads visiting each to entertain the audiences.
